Although the medical community is still debating on whether or not they should be classified as eating disorders, there are some extremely unhealthy eating patterns which are becoming a widespread problem in the United States. The primary reason for it being such a problem is that in many geographical regions they are considered an acceptable part of the lifestyle; most people simply do not recognize exactly how damaging these patterns will be to their overall health.
In locales which promote less stable lifestyles, one unhealthy eating pattern is the habit of basing one's eating on cravings. When people eat based on spur of the moment whims, it should be obvious that they are not getting the proper nutrition that they need. When this pattern becomes one's regular way of life, one's system becomes more and more deprived of the nutrients necessary for good health; this can lead to more serious, longterm health conditions.
Another widely-growing problem is known as grazing. This pattern involves consuming whatever foods one chooses throughout the day, rather than at routine intervals. Although grazing is not as unhealthy as eating based on cravings, it is unwise nonetheless, and can cause minor repercussions such as weight problems.
With today's more active lifestyles, many people also make the mistake of relying far too heavily on assorted vitamin supplements, using these to replace healthy eating habits. In neglecting to realize that these are only meant to supplement one's regular diet, they do not realize that the actual nutritive qualities of food are not duplicated in these supplements-- they need to be consumed in their original form for the best results.
There is also the growing popularity of eating when the person “gets around to it.” This is not the same as eating based on specific cravings; it is a matter of being unable or unwilling to take the time to set mealtime routines, and, instead, to base one's consumption of food on whenever it happens to be convenient. In addition to being an extremely unhealthy pattern in general, there is also the factor that this type of pattern often includes unhealthy food choices, such as an over-reliance on fast foods.
For optimum health, and to lessen one's risk of health problems which are generated by poor nutrition, healthy eating patterns must include both consuming the proper types of food and eating on a regular basis.
